Dollar Store finds are awesome especially if you have some really cool ways to upgrade / upcycle or repurpose them. But if you don’t…well you’re just stuck with a good deal.
So, I’m here to help.
Here are (7) Dollar Store finds that with just a little spray paint and some creativity, can be used to decorate ANY home!
I especially LOVE #6 and am gonna go looking for a rubber mat this weekend!!
Dollar Store Hack #1: Turn that clear, glass vase into a beautiful addition to your mantle, bookcase or window sill. It’s really quite easy. Follow these simple steps below and have fun!
NOTE: these beautiful enamel-painted vases are for DECORATION only. Don’t drink out of them!
Dollar Store Hack #2: Ball / string / patio lights for a fraction of the cost. A bag of these whicker balls (which usually end up in a large vase) can be purchased for very little from a dollar store or any craft store. And then just add you string of lights by gently inserting the bulb. VOILA! *Good for indoors or out.
A Pottery Barn look-alike for a lot less $$!
Dollar Store Hack #3: Plastic bins are perfect to get and keep your stuff organized! I love them. However, the ones that are affordable are typically NOT the color I’m looking for. And that’s why this idea is so stellar!
Go ahead and buy the funky colored bins for cheap cuz with some paint, they become applicable to use in any room in the house!
To give the bins a vintage / metal look, use a gray automobile primer, chalkboard paint and silver craft paint.
Start with the primer. A gray automobile primer works great because it sticks really well to plastic and gives a great matte finish with a bit of texture. Any home improvement store should have this.
Once your primer is dry, get your chalkboard paint ready. Chalkboard paint also has a nice matte finish with some texture. I used a foam brush to rub a thin coat of chalkboard paint on and then immediately wiped the excess off with an old rag.
The final step, to give it a little shine, is to add some silver craft paint and a chip brush. I just barely loaded a small amount of silver paint onto the ends of the brush and then wiped the excess off onto a paper towel before lightly dry brushing it onto the bins.
Looks pretty good to me!
Dollar Store Hack #4: Rope Basket – a lot like the ones they sell at Pottery Barn if I do say so myself! But it costs…wwaaayyy less! 🙂
Buy a dollar store wire basket for next to nothing and get out your glue gun. Glue rope along the basket and that’s it!
I have one of these wire baskets in my son’s room…I’m so doing this!
Dollar Store Hack #5: Cheap rubber door mat TRANSFORMED into a beautiful wall hanging. WOW – THIS is crazy good!
Rubber door mats can be found everywhere. And once you spray on some Heirloom White spray paint, you too will be amazed at how good it looks!
This crafter also took her sander to the mat – once the paint dried – to give it a more rustic / worn / metal look. She did a great job and I’m so doing this for our home!
Dollar Store Hack #6: These plain, wooden frames were just screamin‘ to be used and organized with some creativity!! She found these plain frames and just added some decorative craft paper covered in Mod Podge. She connected them with small hooks.
Don’t you love easy, fun ideas like this??
Dollar Store Hack #7: This is a lesson in never let the color of an item turn you off. It can ALWAYS be painted!
This mom found this adorable owl bank for her daughter’s room but wasn’t a fan of the polka-dots. Within minutes, this owl became a centerpiece in her daughter’s room!
